Format: 12"
Style: Synth pop
Label: Parlophone

A  Fetish
B  Spooky

Vicious Pink, vocalist Josephine Warden and keyboardist Brian Moss started out as backing vocalists for Soft Cell. The band were active between 1981 and 1986 and released a handful of singles. Their songs were mainly targeted at the club scene and never really broke into the main streem.

Fetish / Spooky was released in 1985 and not as succesful as their earlier releases. In my opinion this is quite strange since the song Fetish is a really strong song that should put smiles on faces on dance floors even today. And the theme of the lyrics should also work very well with the fetish- BDSM-clubs. Sexy song with a pounding high energy beat.

The b-side Spooky is sadly the opposite of the a-side. It has a really outdated sound and is a boring track that feels very stuck in the 80's.

This is the second album by Anna von Hausswolff, following her debut, Singing from the grave from 2010. On the debut her main instrument was piano, for this released she has changed it to church organ! Specifically the organ in Annedalskyrkan, the same place that launched her career in 2009 during her performance at the Way Out West festival.

A church organ is a beast of an instrument, and Anna is the beauty controlling the beast. The album is very powerful, beautiful and cinematic. The church organ works very well as the foundation for her sad and beautiful pop songs.

Immediate favorites are Mountains crave and Liturgy of light. This is a very cool album and Anna has created a universe of her own where there is no genres or sound defining her art. Its just really powerful and beautiful music that demands attention. I really look forward to see her live at the Music and Arts festival in Stockholm on August 5th.

Shit Kids - Rik mans flicka
Format: 7" EP

A1  Rik mans flicka
A2  Helgen är här
B1  Alexandra
B2  Harry Hårding

Finally time for some old school swedish punk on Vinyl Hunt. This is another genre that I am really interested in, and I am particularly interested in bands from rural areas of Sweden.

Shit Kids hails from Östersund, right in the center of Sweden, in a beautiful area at Storsjön surronded by big forests and mountains. The name Shit Kids came about when the band heard Jonny Rotten refer to Glen Matlock's Rich Kids as "shit kids". The band agreed that there had to be a real band with that name.

As many punk bands they had a short, but intense live span. The band started in 1978 and split up in 1980. The first EP Jag måste ha ett jobb was released in 1979 and their second and final EP, Rik mans flicka, was released in 1980. There have been alot of short reunions during the years and the band has re-recorded alot of their songs, wich are available at Lunkans vardagsrum.

The music of Shit Kids are not as hard and agressive as the name and cover of the EP implies. The songs are really melodic and more pop then punk. But at the same time it's really DIY and the attitude and lyrical content is definatly punk.

I really love this EP. Rik mans flicka and Alexandra are really good pop songs with charming lyrics and nice vocals. Harry Hårding is more punk but still with a pop vibe and quite melodic. Helgen är här is a perfect party tune celebrating the week end.

I got my copy at Tradera and payed 28,27 €.

Well, I guess I have to write something about the new album Jag är inte rädd för mörkret from Kent. As a swedish band it seems like they are in a league of their own. This is their 10th album, and they still write really good songs and lyrics, still sound hungry and are still relevant in the swedish music scene.

The sound on Jag är inte rädd för mörkret is a return to the classic sound of Kent from the late 90's. I personally miss the electro sounds of the later albums, but I'm guessing most of Kent's fans is really happy 'bout the return of a more guitar oriented sound.

As usual with Kent you get a really good album. Nothing bad here at all, but two songs instantly strike a chord with me. Jag ser dig is very beautiful with matching lyrics. The other favorite is Petroleum who I think has the potential to stick with the band for a very long time. Such a cool song with lyrics mixing swedish angst with cthulhu-references :D

The Overlords - Get down!

The Overlords - Get down!
Format: 12"
Style: Pop
Label: Mega Records

http://www.discogs.com/Overlords-Night-Fever/release/315200

A1  Night fever (Radio edit)
A2  River's edge
B1  Cut Fever (Megamix)

Danish band The Overlords are mostly known for creating early Goa trance with the goa anthem  Sundown from 1991. The 12" Get down (or Night fever) is from three years earlier, and far from the future sound of the band.

Night fever is The Overlords take on the BeeGees classic Night fever from 1977. This is truly a very, very bad version, that sounds like a drunk group of male students singing karaoke trying to get some attention just before the club closes. You have been warned!

It's the second track on the a-side that is interesting. River's edge is a very strange song being a duet, soft beginning and then some rock attitude in the verse and a very catchy chorus ending in a strange bridge leading back to the verse. Fascinating song structure!

If you can get past the very bad singing from Rune Bendixen a.k.a. Sergei Dong, this is a very cool song. His female counterpart Aud Wilken has a very strong voice, that she later used in the band The Poets, and her parts on the track are brilliant. I love these contrasts, almost a bit like beauty meets the beast, and it also reminds me a little of the duet between Nick Cave and Kylie Minouge on the song Where the wild roses grow.

Rediscovered this while browsing through my old records. This is one I picked up in 1988 just because of the look of the cover and the song titles. And it sounded just as it looked - great!

Pop art is a record full of bubblegum pop melodies with  a punk, rock'n'roll attitude and electronic influences. It sounds as the love child of Blondie and Sigue Sigue Sputnik leaving puberty. In my opinion this is a really great record that seems to be a bit ignored or forgotten.

One of Transvision Vamps obvious strenghts is lead singer Wendy James who attracts attention with her sexually charged and rebellious image. But she also have an interesting and expressive voice that fits really well with the bands material.

I love this whole album, but the cocky cover of the Holly and the Italians song Tell that girl to shut up really catches the attention. Also I want you love and Psychosonic Cindy are great up-tempo songs. Other great songs are the softer Sister moon and the opener Trash City.

Transvision Vamp was a really cool band that relesed two more albums before calling it quits. Velveteen from 1989 is also good, but on the final album Little magnets versus the bubble of babble the band had lost their focus.

Really happy to have seen them live at Hultsfred in 1991.

A  Jag kysste henne våldsamt
B  Kärlek och rock'n'roll

The song Jag kysste henne våldsamt is one of my all-time favorites. I never get tired of this song, and the lyrics just blows me away. So I am really happy to finally have this single in my collection.

Anders F Rönnblom is a hard working musician that never really got a break with the large audience. He has released more then 20 albums since the beginning of the 70's. His most known song is Det är inte snön som faller, an ironic christmas song, that was released by the magazine Schlager in 1980.

I found my copy at CD-centralen in Göteborg and payed 4,38 €.
