A  You and me
B  You and me (Instrumental)

Another classic New beat recording from Kaos Dance Records. This one is produced by the founders of the label, Khan and Inger. It's co written with Nikkie Van Lierop a.k.a. Jade 4U. She is also one of the original members of Lords of Acid, one of few bands that survived beyond the scene in Belgium.

You and me is very acid with a very effective baseline. It's all about sex and drugs... and dance. Maybee a bit to extreme acid sounding for most people, but with a very danceable groove.

Found my copy through Discogs and payed 14 €.

A  Acid in the house
B  Acid in the house (Instrumental)

We are back in 1988 again to have a look at the fourth release from Kaos Dance Records. This is produced by the New beat legends Chris Inger, Harry Van Oekel and Praga Khan. The lead singer on this track is a young girl named Nicky Vermeulen a.k.a. Miss Nicky Trax.

This is one of the really great tracks from the label. It's very acid and very groovy. It's also a plus that the vocals are acctuallly sung and don't consist of a bunch of samples, as it tend to do in this genre.

Does anyone have an explanation to why there is wrestling clips in this video? :D

A  Acid queen (Dirty version)
B  Acid Queen (Instrumental)

Acid queen was the third song to be released from the label Kaos Dance Records. Major Problem has the same members as Lords of Acid, and includes the labels founder Maurice Engelen a.k.a. Praga Khan.

Acid queen is one of the major hits from the New beat era. The sound of this track is very acid with a hard and industrial beat. The lyrics are sampled talk about BDSM-themed sex.

This is a personal favorite since I am very found of the 303 bassline with the very acidic sound. Probobly very inspired (smpled from) Phutures song Slam. Also it makes me wanna move and groove on the dance floor.

Found my copy at Discogs and payed 7 €.

A  She's both
B  She's both (No arguments version)

This record was the second release from the Kaos Dance Records label, and came out in 1988. Pussy Jews (pussy juice) must be one of the worst names ever printed on a record sleeve. There's a thin line between being provocative and being embarrassing... and this one falls on the wrong side of that line.

Thankfully the song She's both is alot better then the band name. The song is minimalistic and draws more inspiration from EBM then from Acid house. As often with New beat there is alot of vocal samples and sound effects over a repetetive beat. I like this one because of the heavy production and raw sound of the base and drums.

The song was written by Steven Wittgenstein and produced by Johan Casters a.k.a Morton.  Morton was a very productive New Beat producer and was responsible for over 100 releases during one year. Most of wich was released by the label Subway.

I bought my copy on Discogs and payed 5.00 €.

A  Beat in the street
B  Hypno-Glasnost

A couple of years back I fell in love with Belgium's own version of acid music, the New Beat. The scene was short lived, but between the years 1988-1989 the Belgian dance scene was flooded with slow piched acid, often delivered with naughty lyrics.

One of my favorite labels from this era is Kaos Dance Records, founded by Maurice Engelen (Praga Khan). They released their version of New Beat called Hard Beat.

The labels first release was Beat in the Street by Beat Beat Beat. It was produced by Rembert De Smet and Jean-Lou Nowé under the name S.M. Rembert and Jean-Lou started to work together  in the band 2 Belgen in the early 80's.

Beat in the street is based around a really simple, but rough, base. The drums are very electronic and the song is more minimal then acid. What makes this song work for me is the strange combination of the minimal production and the coarse and aggressive vocals.

But this is not one of my favorite New Beat tracks, and I will come back to more interesting material in upcoming posts by the S.M. producers.

The B-side Hypno-Glasnost is just another, less interesting, version of Beat in the Street.

Bought this one on Discogs and payed 8 €.
