There was a Shamen before Ebeneezer Goode, Progen '91 and rappper Mr C. The group was founded in Aberdeen Scotland and released there first album Drop in 1987. The band then played psychedelic rock.

One of the members, Colin Angus, became interested in the growing dance scene and pioneering house gruops such as S-Express and M/A/R/R/S. The Shamen soon started to interpret those influences in their own music, and the electronic aspects was allready prominent in their second release, In Gorbachev we trust from 1989.

In Gorbachev we trust is a really interesting album. The mix of psychedelic rock and electronic dance music makes quite a nice concoction. I also like the political aspects of the lyrics wich talks about the cold war that was coming to some kind of closure at the time of the records release.

My favorite tracks are Jesus loves Amerika, Transcendental and Synergy. I found this album at the store Skivhugget in Göteborg and payed 7,49 € for it.

Label: Captured tracks

A1 Psychic driving
A2 Always
A3 Voices
A4 Celestial call
A5 The cold world melts
B1 Hold my breath
B2 Eyes closed
B3 Pain
B4 Do you remember
B5 In throes

A little while back I wrote about Soft Metals EP, The cold world melts. Now I have gotten my hands on a ltd edition of their selftitled debut album. This release comes with a silkscreened cover and a marbled green vinyl.

Musically it is a continuation of the EP and it's still alot of analogue synth sounds, dreamy vocals and a mix of dance beats and ambient atmosphere. The song The cold world melts is still a favorite, but I also love songs like Voices and Eyes closed. A really good album that I hope will reach alot of listeners.

A1  Love or music
A2  The cold world melts
A3  Voices
B1  Métaux Mous
B2  Another goodbye

Soft Metals is a band that's also a love story. Ian Hixx and Patricia Hall. They met when Ian was searching for someone to sing on his electronic songs and Patricia wanted music to her poetry. They started to work together and Patricia fell in love with Ian. She started to express her love in the lyrics of the songs they were creating together, and soon the two were a couple. With their love for each other, and their love for analogue synths and drum machines, they created their first release in 2010 - The cold world melts.

If the band itself is a love story, then the music is pure analogue porn. It really sounds old school, and it sounds darn good. It reminds me of the music of Man Parrish, but it also has acid, house and disco vibes. On top of that is Patricias voice which supply the songs with romantic and melancholy qualities.

The cold world melts is a really strong debut and I have just fallen in love with the anlogue soundscape they create. Favorite tracks are The cold world melts and Another Goodbye, but Love or music and Voices are almost equally good. The only song that is a bit less interesting is the instrumental  song Métaux mous.

I will write more about Soft Metals in the near future as their first self-titled album is released today (110719) on Captured Tracks. It's high on my wish-list.
